Can my fireplace actually take an insert?

That is the first question, and the answer depends on what is behind the facing. Open masonry fireplaces with brick or block stacks and clay tile liners, common in pre-1950 neighborhoods, usually accept a wood or gas insert once a continuous stainless liner is run to the top. Zero-clearance factory-built prefab fireboxes with metal chase chimneys are different. Those are listed assemblies. Only an insert listed for that firebox, or a full change-out, works.

Measurements decide the model. Front width, rear width, depth, lintel height, and hearth extension all get recorded before anything is ordered. Damper plates come out or get clamped. A block-off plate goes above the insert so heat stays in the room.

Installing is also the moment to fix the parts nobody reaches later. Rusted-through chase covers, failed storm collars, dried flashing sealant, spark arrestor screens packed with soot and eucalyptus debris. Do them while the ladder is already up.

Sealed direct-vent gas inserts help in tight remodeled homes where smoke rollback came from negative pressure. They draw combustion air from outside.
