Chimney Sweep FAQ — Calabasas, CA
Common questions from homeowners in Calabasas and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
How often does a chimney in Calabasas actually need sweeping?
Use is what drives it, not the calendar. Heating season here runs roughly November through March, and most Calabasas fireplaces are recreational rather than a primary heat source, so a household burning a dozen evenings a winter builds deposits slowly. A yearly look is still worth it, because the inspection catches a rusted cap or a nest even when the flue itself is clean. If you burn most weekends from Thanksgiving to March, or you burn unseasoned wood, plan on a sweep every season.

Walk me through a sweep and inspection visit from arrival to cleanup.
We start at the fireplace, lay down drop cloths, and set a vacuum with a sealed filter at the opening. Then we open the damper, check the smoke chamber and firebox, and brush the flue from inside, from the roof, or both depending on the chimney. While we are on the roof we look at the cap, the spark arrestor screen, the crown, and the flashing. We finish by showing you what we found, including photos of anything you cannot see from the floor.

How is a yearly check different from the deeper inspection done at a home sale?
The yearly check is visual and covers what we can reach and see: firebox, damper, smoke chamber, flue surfaces, cap and arrestor. The fuller inspection goes further and is what you want when a house is changing hands, after a chimney fire, after an earthquake, or after you convert from wood to gas. That one usually means a camera run down the full flue to document every tile joint and liner seam. Buyers and sellers in the gated hillside tracts ask for it often, since those homes have had decades of use and sometimes undocumented work.

How long will the crew be here, and will my living room be a mess?
A standard sweep and inspection runs about an hour to ninety minutes. Add time if there is heavy buildup, a difficult roof pitch, or a second flue in the house. Containment goes up before any brush touches the flue, the vacuum runs the whole time we are working, and the dust stays inside the seal. We pack out our own debris, and the hearth should look the way it did when we walked in.

Which warning signs mean I should schedule before the next cold stretch?
Smoke drifting back into the room instead of up the flue is the loudest one. Also watch for a fire that will not draw, a sour smoky smell on hot August afternoons, dark staining on the brick face or the wall above the opening, and a cap that is missing, bent, or rusted through. Scratching, chirping, or twigs dropping into the firebox means something has moved in, usually birds or raccoons. Any of those is worth a call now rather than in December.

What is creosote, and why does a hard-working flue coat up faster?
Creosote is the tar and soot residue left behind when wood smoke cools on the way up and condenses on the flue wall. It starts as a dusty film, then goes to a flaky crust, then to a hard glaze that has to be worked off. More fires mean more smoke passing through, so a flue used every weekend builds it faster than one lit on holidays. Damp wood, a smoldering low fire, and an oversized or cold exterior flue all speed it up, which is why a short Calabasas season can still leave a surprising amount behind.

My neighbor has an open brick fireplace and mine is a sealed gas unit. Do they need the same service?
No. An open masonry fireplace burns wood, so it needs brushing, creosote removal, and a look at the firebox, damper, and liner. A sealed gas insert, the kind built into most homes here from the 1970s through the 2000s, has a closed glass front and a direct vent, so there is no creosote to sweep. What it needs instead is burner and pilot service, glass gasket condition, vent termination checks, and log positioning. We see a lot of Heatilator, Heat & Glo, Majestic, Napoleon, Superior, and Empire units in Calabasas, and parts availability varies a lot between them.

What is included when you service a gas fireplace?
We test the pilot and the thermocouple or thermopile, because a weak signal is the usual reason a unit lights and then drops out. The burner comes out for cleaning so the ports fire evenly instead of lazily. We pull and clean the glass, check its gasket and seal, and reset the logs and embers to the layout the manufacturer specifies, since logs shoved out of place cause sooting. Then we verify the vent run and termination outside and confirm the unit cycles properly on the switch or remote.

You found a cracked flue tile or a damaged liner. Now what?
We stop and show you the camera footage first, because this is not a repair to take on faith. A cracked tile or an open joint lets heat and combustion byproducts reach framing and wall cavities, so the fireplace comes out of service until it is addressed. The usual fix is a new liner sized to the appliance, run the full height and sealed at top and bottom. We install liners. We do not rebuild masonry or do brickwork, so if the structure itself is failing we will tell you straight and you will need a mason for that part.

What moves the price, and what parts of the job do you handle?
A straightforward sweep on a single-story home is the simplest version. The number moves when the roof is steep or tile, when a hillside lot makes access awkward, when there is glazed creosote that needs real work to break loose, when a nest has to come out, or when the spark arrestor is corroded and needs replacing. That last one comes up constantly here, between the chaparral hillsides, the Santa Ana wind events each fall, and the ember-resistant building rules that followed the Woolsey Fire in 2018. Estimates are free and you approve a firm number before we start. We cover sweeping, inspection, caps, liners, flues, fireboxes, and gas work, and we serve Calabasas and the Ventura Freeway corridor between Woodland Hills and Agoura Hills, usually same day.
